2022 International Women’s Day:
GENDER EQUALITY TODAY FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW
Granted the much clamored gender equality women will rapidly blossom (even from their encouraging positions) to become tremendous transformers and advancers of sustainable growth and progress. They will become enviable world changers and the globe will be full of them (across board) doing brilliantly, daily contributing to overall improvements and providing the needed inspirations for the younger generations (including the Girl-Child and young women alike). But this will only and quickly happen if and when we all join hands to support them in their quests for a greater and brighter future we all longed for. Women are co-owners of the keys of progress and prosperity and we should also allow them open these doors for the benefits of all.
Women are incredible creatures with diverse roles that must be treasured and supported.Their places in global decisions making process, especially on issues that sorely affect them should be non-negotiable. As the world celebrates this year (2022) International Women’s Day, it is pertinent to acknowledge and acclaim the contributions and impacts of women in a global society that makes lives harder for them.
Cheeringly, despite the odds against their wellbeing and survival, women are rapidly rising up and exceeding expectations, taking-charge of the affairs that concerns them and striving to ensure a better today and tomorrow. They are increasingly conscientious, audacious, pragmatic and saying NO to platforms, persons and pursuits undermining their productivities, principles, powers and personalities. They are voicing out loudly and clearly, building strategic alliances, filling positions that once referred to as scared spaces for men, equipping themselves, and making bold statements that ‘ educated and empowered women are not threats but assets of advancement and honour.
In Nigeria, like in many developing nations, the challenges affecting women development are many; they should therefore be fully supported to thrive and duly accorded their rights and benefits. They need adequate representation, perception, empowerment, opportunities for healthy competition, resources, education, advocacy and access to confront the disadvantages affecting them and in fulfilling their God-Given Purposes.
The ongoing campaign by women across the nation to address the rejection of 5 critical bills bordering on citizenship (on foreign husbands of Nigerian women), indigenship, creation of special seats for women in National and State Assembly, 35% in party leadership and more appointive positions to enhance their status and happiness should be wholly supported to logical conclusion. Even though these agitations only further reveals the disparity and unjust treatment meted out to women which themselves are totally wrong and unacceptable.
But, Nigerian women are not resting on their oars in the pursuits for continued relevance and excellence, and are taking aggressive and ambitious strides, making waves in their various careers and influence; bringing pride and respectability to the country; to the African women and the world at large. But, the numbers of women achievers still need to be shored up in order to make more marks and merits. Therefore, the capacity supports to actively play their parts in the development of the National Action Plans and the implementation of its framework in strengthening gender role and balance are urgently needed.
The need to continually mark and celebrate the social, economic, environmentally, cultural and political accomplishments of women and raise awareness about women’s equality and accelerate gender parity should be major priorities of the world managers. Hence, the International Women’s Day celebrated every year on March 8, with this year (2022) theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” is very apt.
As climatic change worsens causing erosion, flooding, storms & hurricane, landslides, heat waves, intense drought, rising sea levels, salinization, organic matter decline, soil biodiversity loss, melting glaciers and warm oceans among others affecting the planet and its inhabitants, women all over the world are boldly taking up the responsibilities to address the situation towards delivering outcomes there are gainful and sustainable if ably assisted.
Salute therefore to all women at the frontlines of the gender equality crusade.
