H.E Bola Tinubu: President & Commander-in-Chief
The foremost duty of any sovereign state is to guarantee the safety of its citizens, protect property, preserve peace, and defend its territorial integrity. Stability is the bedrock upon which prosperity and sustainable development are built; without security, no nation can endure or flourish. And, central to fulfilling this statutory and moral responsibility are the armed forces, the police, and allied paramilitary institutions-the defence structure of the state, entrusted with upholding national protection.
In Nigeria, this critical security obligation is championed by the Nigerian Armed Forces, the backbone of the nation’s security structure. Through coordinated strength, strategic foresight, and well-organized execution of operations, the Armed Forces continue to uphold nationwide safety while upholding Nigeria’s sovereign honour. Their responsibilities extend far beyond conventional warfare to include asymmetrical battles, counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, maritime security, peacekeeping, disaster response, and civil-military engagement.

The Armed Forces comprise three principal services: The Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, and the Nigerian Air Force. Each plays a distinct yet interdependent role in defending the nation. The Nigerian Army spearheads ground operations against insurgency, banditry, and other internal threats. The Nigerian Navy safeguards the country’s territorial waters and assets, particularly within the Gulf of Guinea, protecting vital economic routes and offshore resources. The Nigerian Air Force delivers aerial reconnaissance, rapid deployment capabilities, and precision air support, significantly enhancing overall defensive readiness and capabilities.
Collaborating closely with the Armed Forces is the Nigeria Police Force, responsible for maintaining internal order, crime prevention, and community safety. Supporting these efforts are paramilitary agencies such as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Customs Service, and the Nigeria Immigration Service, all of which play vital roles in border management, infrastructure protection, revenue security, and the overall well-being of the citizenry.
Nigeria remains an active participant in global peacekeeping missions under the United Nations and regional organizations, strengthening its reputation as a stabilizing force on the African continent. Equally important is the ongoing progression of the Armed Forces, marked by investments in advanced training, equipment acquisition, helpful partnerships, technological innovation, intelligence systems, and specialized capacity-building. In a world shaped by rapid technological change and shifting geopolitical realities, proper security planning and effective defence execution are indispensable. Professionalism, discipline, and unwavering respect for established authority remain the guiding principles of the military operations.
The nation’s defence community represents more than a bearer of arms; it embodies sacrifice, patriotism, and collective resilience. Our men and women in uniform serve with honour, often in hazardous and demanding conditions, so that citizens may live, work, and aspire in peace. In some cases, they pay the ultimate price, laying down their lives in the supreme sacrifice for the safety and freedom of many.

As Nigeria advances its democratic journey and strives for sustained peace and prosperity, the relevance of its defence and security institutions cannot be overstated. By refining their strategy, enhancing operational effectiveness, and faithfully fulfilling their constitutional mandates, the Nigerian Armed Forces and allied agencies continue to cement national stability and safeguard the country’s honor in an increasingly complex global environment. Towards these, the Armed Forces have been striving to ensure it remains consistent to national growth realizations through the following:
ADVANCING STRENGTH
Since its founding, the Nigerian Armed Forces have been renowned for their operational gallantry, institutional importance, and diverse invaluable contributions. Its contributions to regional and international security are hugely commendable. But with growth comes attendant challenges, and they have to adapt to emerging encounters.
Recognized among the leading militaries in Africa, they have not yielded to pressure nor retreated in the face of adversity. Instead, they have displayed resilience and renewed strength even under the most demanding conditions. Across numerous internal and external operations, the Armed Forces have responded with professionalism, tactical precision, and disciplined execution meeting crises with the competence and excellence expected of a premier military institution.
The Nigerian Army, leading the Armed Forces and ground operations, has continued to make significant gains in its security sustenance efforts. While admitting that there are still more miles to cover, it is also important to acknowledge its moving forward strides with regards to where it started from. As the world braces up to the new wave of terrorism and wars, the nation’s security forces have also had to deal with new dimensions of security threats ranging from the rise of deadly terrorist gangs, cattle rustling, unrests kidnapping, insurgency banditry and other related criminality inimical to societal safety.
It takes courage, military might, determined personnel, superior and sophisticated firepower to confront and surmount these daunting security actualities, and our admired Forces are up to the task anytime. The Armed Forces leaders have also shown determination to flush out every aggression and persons making Nigeria unsafe and uninhabitable. It is also safe to state that the present Nigerian Armed Forces are committed to the rule of law and democratic principles, ensuring the prevention of coups, and making it clear to Nigerians and the world at large that the forceful takeovers from a democratically elected government in Nigeria are no longer part of their dedication, doctrines, and dealings.
The Forces continue to demonstrate progressive strength, unswerving capacity, and performance, with the Army leading and deepening robust and tactical operations in various theatres of engagement and inflicting untold casualties on the foes of the federation. The Nigerian Army has massively stepped up counter-insurgency and counter-banditry campaigns, reclaiming territories, dismantling criminal enclaves, and restoring civil authority in previously troubled areas.
The Nigerian Navy’s domineering presence in curbing piracy, oil theft, illegal activities, and economic sabotage reflects its prowess in the nation’s maritime space and in the Gulf of Guinea. It is ably supported by an intimidating air force which has grown in air-power dominance capability, aerial surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid mobility, and precision operations. becoming an increasing terror Force to national instability agents. Now, fortified with a modern defence arsenal, new warfare equipment, and intelligent gathering, together our inspiring Armed Forces are advancing in strength in the most intimidating ways to national foes.
ADVANCING STRATEGIES
As Nigeria’s security environment continues to evolve, so too must be the right strategies and systems to effectively cope. The Armed Forces, the security drivers are not static in their integrated defence approaches; they are exhibiting the necessary adaptability in addressing their myriad operations, comprising asymmetric warfare, insurgency, coastal criminality, transnational organized crime, cyber insecurity, and emerging dangers.
It is deploying functional, result-yielding strategies and methodologies that deliver in line with evolving security pressures.
These include:
United Actions
Joint operations, inter-agency cooperation, active collaboration, and enhanced intelligence coordination, in line with international standards and best practices, are now part of the defence establishment’s modifications. This burgeoning synergy between the three tiers of the military, sometimes including the Police and other security agencies working hand-in-hand under a single command to achieve their aim, is indeed impressive and encouraging. Fighting and defending together, sharing communication, and combining strength, personnel, and equipment, towards winning are some of the ongoing strategies that will elicit the support of Nigerians for desirable outcomes.
For instance, the DSS is gathering needful information for attack, the Air Force (NAF) uses this Intel to provide aerial surveillance (ISR) to locate the target and performs precision air-strikes to soften their defences; with the Navy (NN) simultaneously blocking rivers/sea escape routes and providing coastal artillery support if the target is near water, while the Army (NA) ultimately moves in with ground troops and armoured vehicles to root out the threats, seize the territory and clear the camp of any dangers.

IGP Tunji Disu. Inspector General of Police
Examples of United Actions are: Operation Hadin Kai: A joint land and air operation in the North East to combat Boko Haram/ISWAP; Operation Delta Safe: A joint task force (JTF) involving the Navy, Army, and even the Civil Defence to protect oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta, and Operation Whirl Punch, a joint effort to secure the Kaduna-Abuja expressway and surrounding forests, etc, are examples of ongoing theatre operations across the nations. This strategy, among others, is preventing friendly fire, helping in resource sharing, fostering communication and networking using high-tech devices and gadgets, and in the advancement of Multi-Domain Operations (MDO), towards the rapid annihilation of perceived and targeted adversaries.
Civilian Engagement
The Nigerian Armed Forces remain an institution owned by the Nigerian people, funded through public resources, and mandated by the Constitution to safeguard the nation’s security, sovereignty, and collective well-being. As a force drawn from the citizenry and ultimately returning to it after service, the quality of civil-military relations is fundamental to the effective discharge of their responsibilities.

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu: National Security Adviser
Past military interventions in Nigeria’s political life understandably affected public trust. However, in the current democratic dispensation, the Armed Forces operate strictly under constitutional authority and civilian control. Recognizing that lasting security extends beyond kinetic operations, the military understands that winning the fight against insecurity also requires public confidence, cooperation, and clarity.
Consequently, deliberate efforts are ongoing to strengthen civil-military engagement, making it more inclusive, people-centered, and sustainable. Through improved communication strategies, media openness, and structured community outreach, the Armed Forces are rebuilding trust and reasserting their commitments to democratic values and sustenance.
Under the leadership of the current Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, alongside the Service Chiefs, engagement with the civilian population has deepened through humanitarian initiatives, high-level stakeholder interactions, and diplomatic cooperation.

Regular disaster-response interventions, medical outreach programmes, relief-material distribution, and educational opportunities within military-owned institutions reflect a broadened understanding of security, one that prioritizes human welfare alongside territorial defence.
‘’The Nigerian Military is not an occupying Force. It is a constitutionally established institution deeply rooted in democratic principles and the Rule of Law, and remains loyal and accountable to the nation’’
These sustained efforts are helping to build mutual trust, foster national unity, and affirm the Armed Forces as not only defenders of the state but also partners of the people in advancing peace, stability, and national development.
Strategic collaborations
Forming defence alliances remains a time-tested strategic approach to strengthening national security. Such alliances, formal agreements built on mutual cooperation and collective defence, recognize that modern threats transcend borders and require coordinated responses. In today’s interconnected security landscape, partnerships serve as stabilizing pillars of global geopolitics, reinforcing the principle that shared threats demand shared responsibility.
Through the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces have advanced Nigeria’s defence posture by ensuring strategic military cooperation with key international partners. Recent security engagements, including defence collaboration with Turkiye and expanded training partnerships with the United States Armed Forces, among security pacts forged by the nation reflect deliberate efforts to modernize capabilities, enhance operational expertise, and boost institutional capacity.
These alliances promote collective defence, intelligence sharing, early warning coordination, force multiplication, and improved interoperability. Beyond the battlefield, they also strengthen diplomatic relations, expand economic confidence, and position Nigeria more strategically within regional and global security frameworks. In essence, the power of partnership amplifies national strength while contributing to broader international stability.
ADVANCING NATIONAL SAFETY
As Nigeria deepens its democratic governance and advances sustainable development, the Nigerian Armed Forces continue to exhibit professionalism, increase ability, and operational agility. Confronted by internal security challenges, sub-regional criminal networks, and shifting geopolitical pressures, they remain steadfast in safeguarding the “Giant of Africa” and positioning the nation for a secure and progressive future.
Recognized as the Guardians of the Green-White-Green, the Armed Forces represent more than military strength; they embody national unity and regional stability. Through coordinated operations across land, waters, and air domains, they maintain a comprehensive defence shield that protects Nigeria’s borders while contributing to peace initiatives across Africa. Sustained counter-terrorism efforts, reinforced maritime patrols, and rapid-response deployments continue to strengthen safety at home and abroad.

Nigerian Military
Working alongside other security establishments, the Armed Forces are improving Nigeria’s defence system through a newer doctrine, intelligence-led planning, technological upgrades, and enhanced inter-agency linkage. The focus has shifted from reactive operations to proactive prevention, identifying and neutralizing threats in cyberspace, border communities, waterways, and susceptible spaces before they escalate. This transformation underscores a military institution adjusting effectively to new security realities.
All activities remain firmly under civilian authority, with the President as Commander-in-Chief and National Assembly oversight ensuring alignment with constitutional ethics. This democratic outline guarantees that military power serves national interest, obeys the rule of law, enhance public safety, trust and being accountable.
For the Armed Forces, it is Nigeria’s Safety First. And, this obviously extends beyond the battle fields and boots on ground, it is encompassing. In a rapidly changing world, true security demands strength through strategy. The Nigerian Armed Forces displays and demonstrate this balance, and it is willing and able to effectively defend the nation in its onward march.
